This will probably be our last cruise on a Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) "megaship". By "megaship" I'm referring to cruise ships that can have around 4,000 or more passengers. Prior to the advent of megaships most cruise ships had a capacity of around 2,000 passengers plus or minus. The first attempts at building megaships had a capacity of around 3,000 or more passengers but aren't quite large enough to be classified as megaships, though they do have some of the characteristics of the megaships not found in smaller ships.
I like Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL), but not their megaships. That does not mean that all megaships have the characteristics that I don't like about the Norwegian megaships. Quite to the contrary. I love the Carnival Horizon megaship (over 4,000 passenger capacity) and the "almost" megaship, Carnival Splendor (over 3,000 passenger capacity). I already have two cruises booked in 2020 on the new Carnival Panorama megaship, a Carnival Vista Class sister ship of the Carnival Horizon, and the inaugural transatlantic cruise on the new Carnival Mardi Gras megaship for September 2020.
What I like about the megaships is they are like a city on the ocean. They have so many venues that there is always something to do. First, there are a number of different options of where to go to eat, especially to go to eat at no additional cost for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Second, my wife and I love jazz, classical rock, and classical music. There are so many bars and lounges around the megaships that there is often all three of those music formats playing somewhere at different lounges at the same time, especially in the evenings. This is often not true on the smaller ships as they just don't have enough venues to offer the diversity of music nor enough passengers to justify so many different music artists on board the ship. Third, because the ship has so much room, there is a lot of space to wander around. I don't feel like I'm seeing the same venues and corridors or even people over and over again everywhere I turn.
