Above left photo: the Holland America Oosterdam cruise ship. They are in port at the same time as our ship. We were on that ship for a 7-Day Alaska Cruise, July 19-26, 2008, with Barbara's parents, our nephew Justin, and his wife. To view the travelogue of that cruise with photos, visit CruiseRookies.com/2008g19a.html. Both of Barbara's parents passed away a few years ago. They had been on a number of cruises with us. Above right photo: This is a tender port and it will be about a 25 minute tender ride to shore.
Your two-hour sightseeing tour of Stanley includes admission to the Historic Dockyard & Museum. As you make your way through this charming peaceful town, you'll pass colorful houses, picturesque farms and rolling hills. You'll see Christ Church Cathedral, the southernmost Anglican cathedral in the world and the Whalebone Arch, made from the jaws of two blue whales. Other sights you'll see include the Government House and the Liberation Monument, which pays tribute to those who lost their lives during the 1982 Falklands War. At the completion of your drive, guests will be given the option of being dropped off at the Historic Dockyard & Museum which holds an impressive collection of historic and maritime relics and exhibits. (Return to the ship at your leisure on a 5-minute walk.) Returning to port, you'll pass the wreck of the Lady Elizabeth in Stanley Harbor. Built in England in 1869, the 228-foot vessel made a number of visits to the Falklands and in 1913 hit a rock and was declared unseaworthy.
