According to Wikipedia, this cemetery contains the graves of notable people, including Eva Peron ("Evita"), presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy, and military commanders such as Julio Argentino Roca. In 2011, the BBC hailed it as one of the world's best cemeteries, and in 2013, CNN listed it among the 10 most beautiful cemeteries in the world.
The reason we came here, and the reason most tourists come here, is to see the tomb of Eva Peron, "Evita," the controversial first lady and first wife of Argentina President Peron.
After we paid about US $5 each to enter the cemetary, we asked if any tours in English were available. They said the cemetery itself does not provide tours, but they directed us to a private tour guide, Simon, who was standing with two other people who are also going on our cruise. Simon was about to provide a private tour for them. He asked the couple if they'd mind if we joined them and they said they didn't mind. We asked Simon what the tour cost, and he said it cost whatever we wanted to pay at the end of the tour. That sounded like a deal to us. Simon turned out to be a fantastic guide to the cemetary. He provided a great amount of details regarding the tombs of many of the famous people in the cemetary including Eva ("Evita") Peron.
We saw this person just outside the cemetary exit pretending to be without a head. He was playing eerie music on the saw. We gave him a US $1 tip for his effort and his entertainment. The person with the blue baseball cap and blue shirt in many of the below photos was our tour guide, Simon. He is from the south of England but has residency in Argentina and also speaks fluent Spanish.
We arrived at The Argentine Experience 20 minutes too early for our 7:30 PM reservation so we walked down the street to Von Berry Coffee. We ordered 2 cups of Espresso. The amount of coffee they served in each cup was barely enough to cover the bottom of the tiny cup. The cup itself was very tiny and when we have ordered Espresso in the past they have filled the tiny cup. But at this place, the amount they gave barely was enough to hid the bottom of the cup. But it was extremely thick and bitter. But at least each cup was barely US $1 in cost.
Just like the rest of the world, KFC, McDonald's and Subway everywhere. We saw many Burger Kings and Starbucks in Buenos Aires also. On our drive back to our hotel, we passed 4 McDonald's!
