History buffs and inquisitive travelers will relish the opportunity to embark on an approximately one hour narrated ride takes you through the majestic Sierra de la Giganta mountain range en route to San Javier, the second-oldest town in all of the Californias.
Nestled in a deep valley in the Sierra de La Giganta, Mission San Javier was founded in 1699 by Jesuit Father Francisco Maria Piccolo, the second of the missions established by the Jesuits. The original mission was abandoned in 1703 after repeated native attacks, and the next incarnation was developed by Father Juan de Ugarte, who organized the dams and irrigation system that can still be seen today. He also planted fruit trees and grape vines, initiating the Baja wine industry, which is a mainstay of the local economy. In 1744, a few years after Ugarte's death, Father Miguel del Barco began construction on the mission that is seen today. San Javier Mission was built out of stones in traditional baroque architecture. It took 14 years to complete and is considered the most beautiful and best- preserved of all the Baja California missions. When you step inside to explore the interior, marvel at the stunning gold altar piece, five vivid oil paintings brought from Mexico City and the two statues, one of San Francisco Javier and another one of Our Lady of Guadalupe. An 18th century crucifix and three bells which date back to 1761 complete the decor.
Take a walk through the cobblestone town surrounding the mission and find the monument known as the ""Cross of Calvary." From this point, hundreds of pilgrims visited the patron saint, some walking on their knees to reach him.
At the completion of your cultural day, a light traditional Mexican snack and soft drink will be served before you re-board your transportation for the picturesque ride back to port.
Special Notes:
Please be aware that the transportation standard in Mexico is not the same as North America. Participants must be able to negotiate 2 to 3 steps up into the transportation. Please wear light clothing, good walking shoes, and a hat and bring some bottled water.
Get fancy - tonight's formal night! We can't wait to see you all dressed up in our dining venues and around the ship.
