During the times we are in our cabin on all of our cruises this is the way I keep things so that we can enjoy the fresh ocean air and the sounds of the ship plowing through the ocean. This is especially true while we sleep during the night. I use a balcony chair to prop the door open and set the thermostat to an "off" or neutral position to minimize wasting any heating or air conditioning while the balcony door is open.
The Carnival Splendor is also the only cruise ship I have seen where the door leading to the hallway has a vent at the bottom of the door. On most other cruise ships there is not a tight fit at the bottom of that door and thus air can get through under the door. On other ships I'll lay down towels in front of the bottom of the door to prevent air from circulating in and out of our cabin while the balcony door is open. The door to the hallway in this cabin is fairly air tight but it is the vent in the door that I need to block. To do that I just tape a couple of pieces of paper over the vent. I can tell that air is trying to rush out through this vent when the balcony door is open as the papers stick to the vent even without any tape. But if I don't tape them, the papers will fall to the floor when I close the balcony door.
One day I was sitting at my desk and I felt a drop of water drop on me as though it was raining inside our cabin! I looked up and saw that the air conditioning vent was covered with little water droplets. It had been so warm and humid outside ever since we left Hawaii. That humidity had entered our room and condensed on the cold air conditioning vent. I got up on the desk chair and used a towel to wipe off the air conditioning vent.
